本教材共有15章，每章覆盖一个交际话题。各章的首页提示简要描述了在本章（交际话题）内PETS第二级考生应达到的英语交际水平。

本教材共有28个单元，每单元内容包括：

1. 对话/独白

该部分由与本单元交际话题相关的3、4段对话/独白组成，对话/独白情景真实、语言地道、长短恰当、难度适宜，目的是训练和提高学习者的听力水平。每段对话/独白前，均有提示语点明对话/独白的背景和数道依据对话/独白内容设置的问题，以帮助考生充分理解和操练对话/独白。

2. 课文

课文是体现话题的阅读材料。每单元中均有一篇与该单元主话题相关的课文，其长度一般为300词左右，难度基本相当于二级水平，目的是训练和提高考生的阅读理解水平。每单元课文前均设置了几个与课文内容相关的课前思考题，旨在调动读者学习的兴趣。此外，每单元课文后均附有问题，以帮助考生了解自己对课文的理解程度。

3. 单词和短语

单词和短语是本单元对话/独白和课文中出现的生词和短语，并按在对话/独白和课文中出现的先后顺序给出了单词的新国际音标、词性、中文释义和短语的中文释义。

4. 注释

注释针对对话/独白和课文，内容包括两方面：一是从语法、词汇等方面点拨对话/独白和课文中的难点；二是对长难句进行语法分析，并举例讲解语言点、知识点，目的是训练考生灵活运用语言的能力。

5. 模拟训练

模拟训练是针对各单元的话题和重点考试内容设计的，考生可以对该单元的学习情况进行检测。该部分题型与笔试、口试考试真卷要求一致，以便于考生全面备考PETS二级。

6. 补充阅读

为使考生对相关话题进行更深入的了解，提高阅读能力，在每单元后附有一篇补充读物。

Dialogue 1 

Do you know how to describe somebody? Do you know how to ask someone’s opinion of another one? Here several examples are given about it. 

Chen and Wang are talking about Yao Ming.

Chen：Are you free tonight? There is a match between the Rockets and the Kings.

Wang：Really? So great! Of course I will watch it. You know I like Yao Ming very much and he plays for the Rockets. 

Chen：Many people like Yao Ming because his basketball skills are excellent， and also he plays basketball like a gentleman.

Wang：What’s more， after Yao Ming joined in the Rockets， they defeated a lot of teams.

Chen：But it’s not an easy thing for him to be successful. When Yao Ming just came to America， he couldn’t get used to the training there.

Wang：Yes， there is a big difference between American and Chinese training. But with his hard work， he is accepted by the American people.

Dialogue 2

Karen and George are talking about actor Ge You.

Karen：What do you think of this Chinese film A  World  without  Thieves?  

George：Not bad. There are many famous actors in this film， such as Ge You. I hear he has ever got a lot of prizes.

Karen：I can’t believe it. I don’t think he is so handsome. George：Many people like him because he is humorous and looks very funny. In fact he acts very well.

Karen：How did he become an actor?

George：His father is also a very good actor in China; maybe he became an actor because of his father.

Karen：Yeah， parents can really have an effect on children’s decision.

George：You know at first he was not so popular，but after he acted as an editor in a very funny TV play，he became famous.

Karen：Sounds interesting. I want to see his other films.

George：I know Bob likes Chinese films very much; maybe he can lend them to you if he has Ge You’s other films. 

Dialogue 3 

Tina and Jim are talking about two Chinese astronauts.

Tina：Jim， China sent out another spaceship this morning and this time there are two astronauts in it.

Jim：China has made rapid progress. What are the two astronauts’ names? They are so great and lucky to be sent into the space. 

Tina：They are Fei Junlong and Nie Haisheng. It is said that they are chosen from a group of astronauts. Before they are sent into the space， they were sent to Russia for training.

Jim：What’s that for?

Tina：To help them get used to the life in the space. You know they can’t sleep or eat in the space like us on the earth.

Jim：Yes. How long are they going to stay in the space?

Tina：Sorry， I can’t remember the number clearly， maybe more than 115 hours.

Jim：Though I know it’s very dangerous， I’d also like to go to the space. Tina：Yes， the two astronauts are chosen because of their excellent physical and psychological states.

Jim：I hope in the future I can also travel to the space.
