Plutarch's life spanned the second half of the 1st century AD.

He was highly educated in rhetoric and philosophy at Athens but his

Certainly it is dangerous to disbelieve or show contempt for the power of the gods, but it is equally dangerous to harbour superstition, and in this case just as water constantly gravitates to a lower level, so unreasoning dread filled Alexander's mind with foolish misgivings, once he had become a slave to his fears.
