The heavens determined and manipulated the fate of all human societyin accordance with its own will;all human disasters and blessings were displays of suchwill.Only when people acted according to the will of the heavens could they avoid disaster.Humans could only obey the heavens,could not ask favor from or ever try to change theheavens.People thuowed down,not only to the vile yet impalpable heavenut also to afigure who could not be easily seen.

People called the one who could commune with theheavens the son of heaven.The son of heaven,like everyone else,was also ject to theheavenut knelt ahead of others,at a place closest to the heavens.
